Line-up: Jakob Dinesen, tenor sax; Anders Filipsen, keyboards; Nils Bo Davidsen, cello; Sal Dibba, djembe and percussion; Anders Christensen, electric bass. “Jakob Dinesen’s Slow Flow won the Jazz Album of the Year award at DMA Jazz 2025.
The saxophonist now takes over Paradise Jazz with his award-winning project and a group of leading musicians from the Danish scene.
For more than 35 years, Jakob Dinesen has made his mark on Danish jazz, moving freely between jazz, pop, afro and musical borderlands.
The music of Slow Flow is cinematic, intense and open, drawing inspiration from spiritual jazz, Ravel and soul to Weather Report, Italian film music, David Lynch, afro and reggae.
Slow Flow also traces its roots back to Dinesen’s musical beginnings in Once Around the Park and Jakob Bro’s Beautiful Day, among others.
Over the years, Dinesen has played with, among others, Hugo Rasmussen, Thomas Helmig, Thomas Blachman, Lars H.U.G. and Kira Skov.
He has also worked on his releases with international jazz names such as Paul Motian, Jeff Tain Watts, Nasheet Waits, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Eddie Gomez and Ben Street.
For Dinesen, Slow Flow is about building bridges between musical traditions, cultures and generations.
The inspiration is also personal.
His children have roots in both Africa and Denmark, and he hopes they will carry traditions and knowledge from both sides of the family with them.
This idea is reflected in the music, where different expressions meet freely and create something new.
Slow Flow moves across genres, places and times -- between past, present and future.
For Dinesen, the music also holds out hope for a more peaceful world, where differences can meet and exist side by side.” www.paradisejazz.dk
