Workshop: Kom i gang med at strikke historiske sokker
See 400-year-old knitted stockings up close and try your hand at recreating the historic design. A talk, a display of archaeological finds and a workshop led by sock knitter and designer Birgit Kønig and archaeologist and museum curator Mia Toftdal.
Københavns Museum welcomes sock knitter and designer Birgit Kønig, who has recreated a design from a historic stocking found by archaeologists from Københavns Museum.
We begin the evening by looking at the well-preserved remains of stockings worn by Copenhageners several hundred years ago. The stockings were mainly found during excavations at Rådhuspladsen as part of the Metro construction works. You will then hear about the history of the knitted stocking before the workshop begins. During the workshop, you will receive the knitting pattern for the sock, based on a historic original. Along the way, Birgit will offer tips and ideas, explain different ways of casting on and show more than 60 socks.
There will be an opportunity to buy other patterns by Birgit for DKK 15 each. The proceeds go to Læger Uden Grænser.
Please note: Bring your own knitting needles (3 mm), double-pointed needles (3 mm) and sock yarn. The talk will be followed by a 1–1.5-hour workshop, where you can start knitting your stockings and get help from Birgit.
