With Planetarium's lifelike, pin-sharp planetarium system, we bring you right up close to these great instruments as we visit the largest and most significant telescopes on Earth and in space. For as long as humans have existed, we have gazed at the starry sky with wonder and curiosity. A decisive turning point came in 1609, when Galileo Galilei became the first to point a telescope at the night sky. In an instant, the universe grew larger, and our understanding of it changed for ever. Today, enormous telescopes on Earth and in space are studying the universe in unprecedented detail. This evening, we take you along to some of the world's most spectacular observatories – from the Atacama Desert in Chile and the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii to the James Webb Space Telescope. Along the way, we discover how telescopes have revolutionised astronomy – from Tycho Brahe's observation of a supernova and Galileo's first glimpse of Saturn to the Hubble Space Telescope's iconic images of distant galaxies. We delve into how modern telescopes reveal invisible dark matter, search for planets orbiting distant stars and can even produce images of black holes using telescopes spread across the Earth. Look forward to a fascinating evening beneath the planetarium dome, where we explore the universe through the world's most advanced telescopes. After the talk, we will screen the film Rummets Forunderlige Lys, which tells the story of how modern observation technology continues to expand our understanding of the cosmos.
