Vin- & Slagmarker
Vin- & Slagmarker – World history through five exciting wines When I’m on holiday, I often look for two things: an interesting winery to visit and something interesting to experience. Since I come from a family of historians, I often end up at history museums and battlefields.
For this wine tasting, I’ve teamed up with my brother, military historian Lars Bangert Struwe, whom many know as a TV expert on security policy and host of the Geopol podcast. I’ve selected five exciting wines to talk about, all from wine regions where history has literally left its mark on the land. Lars will reveal the dramatic events that unfolded close to these vineyards – and give you insider tips on the best museums in the area, should you feel like travelling there yourselves.
This is not just a wine tasting. It’s a time machine with a glass in your hand.
Perfect for curious wine lovers, history buffs with a discerning palate – or anyone who wants to experience something different.
The evening’s programme
Mosel and the Romans, tasting Weingut Reinhold Haart, 2024 Haart Mosel Riesling
Along the steep slopes of the Moselle, Roman legionaries planted the first vines as part of the empire’s advance northwards. Wine became a symbol of the frontier of civilisation – where order met the world of the barbarians.
Sicily and the Normans, tasting Planeta, 2023 Chardonnay Organic, Etna.
When the Normans conquered Sicily in the 11th century, they brought both the sword and a meeting of cultures between north and south. The island’s wine traditions became a reflection of the Mediterranean crossroads of Arab, Greek and European influences.
Piedmont and Napoleon, tasting G.D. Vajra, 2021 Albe Barolo Organic.
In 1796, Napoleon’s armies marched east through Piedmont’s misty hills, with vineyards as the backdrop to the new Europe of the revolution. The firm structure and power of the region’s wines reflect the same discipline required by his campaigns.
German Spätburgunder and the First World War, tasting Weingut Bernhart 2023 "Auf der Grenze" Spätburgunder Organic Among the vineyards along the Rhine and in the Ahr Valley, soldiers dug in as the guns shook the ground. Spätburgunder became a quiet reminder of the life and culture that continued despite the destruction of war.
Lebanon and the civil war, tasting Château Musar, 2016 Château Musar Red. In the midst of the chaos of the civil war, Gaston Hochar refused to leave his cellar in the Bekaa Valley. Château Musar became a symbol of resistance and hope – a wine born of war, but made for the table of peace.
