SUMMARY:Kan vi snart aflæse psykisk sygdom i kroppens signaler?

DESCRIPTION:When you are standing in a lift with strangers or heading to
a meeting in your boss’s office\, your brain registers far more than yo
u have time to consciously consider. Glances\, distances and small moveme
nts can cause changes in your heart rate\, pupils and sweat production. B
ut we do not all react in the same way. Could these differences become bi
omarkers for mental disorders – measurable biological signs that psychi
atry has long lacked?\n\nThis is what Kamilla Woznica Miskowiak\, profess
or of cognitive neuropsychiatry\, is investigating. Her study participant
s have been diagnosed with conditions including bipolar disorder\, ADHD\,
borderline personality disorder and psychosis. They move through everyda
y situations created in VR while researchers track their gaze and bodily
responses.\n\nThe initial studies show that people with the same diagnose
s can\, as a group\, have similar response patterns – time will tell wh
ether it is possible to identify a biomarker that can reveal an individua
l’s diagnosis. But perhaps combinations of bodily signals could one day
supplement a psychiatrist’s conversation with a patient – for exampl
e when several disorders overlap\, or the most apparent diagnosis obscure
s another.\n\nAnd this subject concerns far more people than those curren
tly receiving psychiatric treatment: a Danish register-based study has sh
own that 82.6 per cent of us either receive a psychiatric diagnosis in ho
spital or have a prescription for psychiatric medication dispensed during
  our li…
