DESCRIPTION:I like telling my story\; it makes me reflect on things and p
 uts my life into perspective. I also think you could call it public educa
 tion – especially when I’m out walking with young people. I’d like 
 to turn the dark experiences in my life into something positive. What do 
 I talk about? I was always full of energy as a kid and was sent off to sa
 il the world’s oceans. My time as a young sailor led me into deep water
  – both literally and mentally. It was at sea that I tried heroin for t
 he first time\, aged 16. That was the beginning of more than 20 years of 
 substance misuse on the streets – first in Aarhus and later in Copenhag
 en. When you encounter such a powerful drug so early in life\, you lose m
 uch of your youth and innocence – they are replaced by drugs and an ext
 remely tough environment.\n\nI spent most of my time on the streets: hang
 ing out\, getting drugs and finding money to pay for them. Crime became a
  natural companion\, because money had to be found – a lot of money. I 
 have therefore also been in prison several times\, both in Thailand and i
 n Denmark.\n\nIt was also in prison that something began to change. Durin
 g one sentence\, I was held in solitary confinement\, and to pass the tim
 e I started reading. I devoured books on philosophy and history – I cou
 ld feel something stirring in me. Slowly\, I moved away from drugs and to
 wards a life of reflection and curiosity.\n\nMy story shows that people w
 ith substance misuse issues are more than their addiction. We have depth\
