SUMMARY:Civil ulydighed: At stå i vejen for at blive hørt
LOCATION:Universitetsbiblioteket i Fiolstræde\, Fiolstræde 1\, 1171 Kø
 benhavn K
DESCRIPTION:A road blockade brings morning traffic to a halt\, and many d
rivers and politicians are angry. Have the demonstrators lost\, then? We
celebrate reasoned discussion as the way to find common solutions. But di
sruption can also open up a political conversation – even when demonstr
ators become unpopular.\n\nThat is the argument made by rhetoric research
er Thore Keitum Fisker\, based on his fieldwork with the climate campaign
Nødbremsen. Drawing on critical rhetoric and theories of civil disobedi
ence\, he examines how the body acts politically when it physically stand
s in the way. Among others\, he draws on the philosopher Jacques Rancièr
e: politics is also about who gets to be heard at all\, and which forms o
f expression are recognised as political.\n\nThe blockade is also a strat
egic choice that requires preparation. Thore has taken part in several ro
ad blockades himself\, as well as in training sessions where would-be dem
onstrators practise staying seated\, keeping calm and facing anger withou
t escalating the conflict.\n\nWhat can disruption achieve that arguments
alone cannot? And how do we assess the impact of a protest if it both pro
vokes opposition and makes a political cause harder to ignore?\n\nPhoto:
