Copenhagen's theatrical
creativity is well renowned all over Europe. The foremost
stage, not only i Copenhagen but in Denmark, is the Royal Theatre, the home of world
class theatre, opera and ballet.
The city is also well known for its many private theatres, many of them with an experimental profile.
A century old Det Ny
Teater has had tremendous success with modern classics
like Phantom of the Opera.
The Royal Theatre
The Royal Danish Theatre (Det Kongelige Teater) is Denmark's
foremost stage, housed in a building inspired by the
Italian Renaissance, dating from 1872. The theatre which
was recently restored is a jewel and of course there
is a royal box in the auditorium.
On the playbill you'll
find opera, concerts, classic dramas and ballets, classic as well
as Balanchine settings.
However, The Royal Theatre has now three great stages: besides the Old Stage (Den gamle
scen) at Kongens Nytorv, there is The Opera (Operaen), and since february 2008 - The Royal Danish Playhouse (Skuespilhuset) a new, modern stage for dramatic arts.
The Opera House, which became a landmark for Copenhagen, have two stages: Main Stage and Takkelloftet.
The Royal Theatre has several ensambles: the Royal Ballet Academy,
the Royal Danish Orchestra (world´s oldest), and Opera Chorus.
The
theatre is subsidized by government, so tickets are
reasonably priced.
