· Accessible travel: Copenhagen is a very friendly and accessible city to disabled travellers. Quite a few hotels in different categories offer facilities like e.g. roll-in showers. Parking is easy and the major department stores have elevator-access to all floors. If you're travelling with a wheel chair and need service, most bicycle repair shops can help you.

· Accommodation: Copenhagen offers a number of possibilities to find a suitable accommodation for everyone. You will find a wide range of anything from B&B to camping-sites, youth hostels and 5-stars hotels.

· Airport:

Copenhagen has one international airport; Copenhagen Airport also called Kastrup. In Denmark you find two other international airports; Aarhus: Tirstrup Airport and Billund Airport.


· Alcohol: Alcoholic beverages, wine and beer can be bought in any grocery store.

· Ambulance: Dial 112. Calls from public phones are free.

· Arrival: By Air Copenhagen has direct flights to/from well over 100 cities worldwide. A journey airport-to-city-centre takes 12 minutes by train.

By Boat Copenhagen has direct ferry connections with Norway and Poland. And Copenhagen welcomes a large number of international cruisers every year.

By Car The Öresund Bridge that connects Copenhagen (Denmark) with Malmö (Sweden) opened July 1, 2000. It takes around 15 minutes to cross the bridge by car. Denmark's highway system links Copenhagen to the rest of Europe and Scandinavia via the E-highway-system.

By Train DSB - the Danish State Railway - has a number of international train-connections to/from Scandinavia and the rest of Europe connecting Copenhagen not only with all the capitals of Continental Europe but also links Copenhagen to the British Isles via Holland. All international trains arrive in and depart from Copenhagen Central Station in the centre of Copenhagen.

· Banks: Most banks are open Monday - Friday between 09:30 - 16:00. Weekends closed.
Banks in airports and train stations sometimes have other opening hours. For information on changing money - see Currency.

· Bathing: Summertime the water has a nice temperature. Copenhagen has two beaches within the city limits.

· Beach: Amager Beach Park, with white sand beach, stretches all the way from the baths 'Helgoland' to Kastrup in southern Copenhagen.

· Beer: The primary national drink of the ancient Scandinavians was said to be ale or oel. The two most famous Danish beers are Carlsberg and Tuborg. (see also Alcohol)

· Bicycle:

· Books: There are a couple of international bookstores in Copenhagen.

· Bus: Bus tickets can be purchased from vending machines at stations, ticket offices and on buses from the driver. Alternatively you can purchase a Copenhagen Card, which is valid for any travel in the Greater Copenhagen Area. For more information:

· Business: With more than companies Copenhagen offers business possibilities in most areas. Copenhagen also plays a strategically important part as an exhibition and trade fair city.

· Car Rental: You will find car rentals all over the city and at the airports. Some gas stations also have car rentals. You also can purchase a combined 'Fly and Drive'-ticket at your Travel Agency. More: Getting around

· Camping: There are a few campsites in the Copenhagen area and yet another opens in June near Copenhagen city centre.

· Casino: Copenhagen has one international casino close to the city centre.

· Change / Cambio: Money can be changed at banks open 5 days a week or bureaux de change like Forex open 7 days a week.

· Cinema: There are some 60 cinemas in the greater Copenhagen area. Note that movies are not dubbed, they have subtitles.(see TV / Film)

· Climate: The Danish climate follows the four seasons. July is normally the warmest month, with an average temperature of around 20°C. February is generally the coldest month with an average of just below 0°C.
During spring and autumn the weather may vary a lot, from cold to warm and from sun to rain. During the winter season the climate varies from one year to another. One year it might hardly snow at all and the next year there might be snow up to your knees. When packing your wardrobe it should be like the weather - varied!

· Coffee: There are numerous cafés in Copenhagen but not that many regular coffee shops. A Danish café can be anything from the local bar serving a beer to a trendy restaurant with a tempting menu.

· Conference:

The Øresund Region has earned a reputation as one of the world's leading destinations for international conferences and congresses. Copenhagen and Malmö - the two main cities of the Øresund-region has 22,000 hotel beds and Scandinavia's largest conference centre.


· Congress: Copenhagen has positioned itself as one of the world's most appealing international congress cities.
The ICCA DATA statistics, rank Copenhagen as the most popular city in the world for international congresses.

· Credit Cards: Major credit cards are accepted at most places.

· Currency:

The Danish currency is the Krone (DKK), which is divided into 100 øre.
There is no limit to the amount of foreign or Danish currency that can be brought into Denmark.

25 øre, 50 øre (both copper)
1 krone, 2 kroner, 5 kroner (silver, with a hole)
10 and 20 kroner (both brass)

Banknotes denominations:
DKK 50, DKK 100, DKK 200, DKK 500 and DKK 1.000.

· Driving:

Denmark has right hand-side traffic.

Seat belts: It is compulsory by the law to us seatbelts.
Speeding ticket: is given on the spot by the police.
Lights: Dimmed headlights are mandatory by the law 24 hours a day.
Children: Up to 7 years old children shall use special seats in the car. Children shall be seated in the backseat.
Petrol/Gas: Most gas-stations accept major credit cards.

· Electricity: Denmark, has 220-volt AC, 50Hz current and uses two-pin continental plugs. Visitors from the UK need an adaptor for electric appliances and visitors from the US need a transformer to be able to use 110/125V appliances.

· Festivals: The annual Copenhagen Jazz festival takes place in July. Featuring new talents and the old masters and a variety of 600 concerts in bars, concert halls and outdoor scenes and a daily parade through the streets of the city.

· Golf: You'll find 25 18-hole golf courses in the Greater Copenhagen Area. A handicap of 36 is mandatory.

· Health Insurance: Tourists in Denmark are covered by the public health insurance within the limits agreed upon between your home country and the Danish authorities. If you are a citizen of a non-EU country you should ensure that you have adequate health insurance. Check with your travel agency or your insurance company.

· Language: The official language is Danish, which is related to and similar to Swedish and Norwegian.
On the whole everybody speaks English and often very good. Many speak German too.

· Library: The Black Diamond is the official short name for the new Royal Library department. Apart from being a library, the establishment also houses a concert hall, a book store, a restaurant and an exhibition hall.

· Museums: Copenhagen has a dozens world-class museums, many ancient streets and historical buildings. along with the world-famous Tivoli Gardens; and a resident monarchy that is the oldest in the world.

· Nature: Dyrehaven, 15 minutes by S-train (the local train - get off at Klampenborg) is one Copenhagen's most beautiful parks. 1,000 acres has a variety of wildlife, including stags and fallow deer. Horse and carriage rides are available through the park. Dyrehaven is a former royal hunting park. In 1670, the king Frederik III used the park as a hunting retreat and so did kings following him. You'll find a couple of restaurants in the park as well as the oldest amusement park in the world "Bakken" established in the same century as the royal park was laid out.

· News in English: Radio Denmark International (1062 Mhz) broadcasts news in English on weekdays at 08.40, 11.00, 17.10 and 22.00. Major British and American newspapers are sold at newsstands all over the city.

· Parks: The only "real" park in the centre of the city is called "Kongens Have", the King's Garden. The official name is the Rosenborg Palace Garden. It was laid out by the Danish renaissance king, Christian IV, in the beginning of the 17th century. It is the oldest royal garden in Denmark. The crown jewels are kept in the Rosenborg Palace which is open to public.

· Passport: EU citizens must present a passport or an ID card valid for the duration of the stay in Denmark. Citizens of other countries must have a valid passport. Some non-EU citizens are required to produce a visa. Please contact your travel agent or the nearest Danish diplomatic post for further information.

· Petrol: (see Driving)

· Pets: It is possible to bring along your pet but it takes an extensive time of planning ahead. You need to start your planning at least 6 months ahead of your departure, to be sure you'll get all necessary documents and authorizations.

· Pharmacy: There are more than 40 pharmacies in Copenhagen.
Opening hours are Monday - Friday, mostly from 09:00 or 10:00 to 18:00 (9/10 am - 6 pm).
Saturdays: 10:00 - 14:00 (10 am - 2 pm)
A couple of pharmacies are opened 24 hours a day.
To get certain kinds of medication you have to visit a doctor first to get a prescription.

· Radio: (see News in English)

· Religion: The state church of Denmark is Evangelical Lutheran but all religions are represented within the population. Protestant churches in major cities usually have services in English once a week.

· Rent A Car: There are car-rental services at the airport, and all over Copenhagen city. You can always find a car that suits your needs. Many gas stations also have rental cars, usually at reasonably low prices. Two of the most prestigious Rent A Car-offices are AVIS and EUROPCAR.

· Restaurants: When eating out you will get quality food at affordable prices. Lunch is served between 11:00 - 15:00, after that you order from the restaurants´ ordinary menu. Danish specialty "smörrebröd" open-sandwiches you'll find during lunch hours in special "smörrebröd" restaurants.
You can usually order up until 22:00.

· Service: (see Information)

· Shopping: Boutiques are usually open weekdays 10:00 - 18:00 (10 am - 6 pm), on Fridays one hour longer. Saturdays: 10.00 - 16.00. Sundays closed, except the first Sunday, between noon and 16:00.
Department stores: Magasin du Nord and Illum are landmarks for shopping. The malls are usually open an hour longer than the smaller boutiques and shops.

· Sightseeing: You can choose from a variety of daily city tours by coach or boat departing from the City Hall Square in front of the Palace Hotel. Booking not necessary.

· Smoking: Generally, It is forbidden to smoke in most of the public areas, cafés, pubs and restaurants included. However, where the serving area is smaller than 40 square metres, the owner can make exception and allow smoking.

· Speed-Limits: (see Driving)

· Subway (Metro) :

The high modern, fully automated (the metro is driverless) subway (called Metro) in Copenhagen is a very effective link between the large urban areas to the east and west with the city centre. The two lines run daily, around a clock. During the day, the interval is about 4 minutes, at night -15 to 20 min.
Tickets & Prices: there is a uniform ticket for all public transportation in metropolitan Copenhagen. A Metro ride costs one clip on a multi-ride, ten rides (clips)-ticket (2 zones). This ticket costs DKK 130, while a single ride with a single two-zone ticket will cost you DKK 21. Both types of ticket are valid for one hour. An extra night fee is applied between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. Children up to 12 YOA accompanied by adults ride for free (max. 2 children per adult).

· Taxi:

The city has more than 1,700 taxis organised in 5 major companies and licensed by the authorities. The basic fare for a cab stopped on street is DKK 19 (40 DKK during a weekend's night), when ordered 32, plus DKK 11,50 per km - DKK 12.50 in evenings and weekends. Fares include a service charge, so tipping is not expected.
Most taxis accept credit cards but make sure to tell the driver at the beginning of the journey. The seat belt for all passengers of age 3+ is required. Smoking is prohibited.

There are no area code numbers in Denmark.
Public telephone booths
Public pay phones accept coins or prepaid Telecards. Just lift the receiver and insert your card or your coin. For international calls use 5-20 DKK, but please note no money refund whether connected or not.
Telephone cards come in denominations of 30, 50 and 100 DKK and are available from kiosks and post offices.

· Train: It's easy to travel by train to and from Copenhagen. You'll find direct trains to Sweden, Germany and other Scandinavian and international destinations at reasonable prices. The Öresund train from the centre of Copenhagen to the centre of Malmö, Sweden, take approx. 35 minutes.

· TV / Film: Cable- and satellite-TV is widely spread in Denmark, so it's easy to get access to channels with languages as English, German, Spanish etc.
Movies on TV or at the cinema have subtitles and are not dubbed which makes it possible for you to watch them in their original version.
